Hermanus Town

Situated just 140 kilometres from Cape Town and built between the beautiful shores and cliffs of Walker Bay, Hermanus has grown from a small seaside resort town to become possibly the best-known place for whale watching in the world. This town is also famed for its natural scenic beauty, long stretches of pristine beaches and excellent variety of restaurants, cafes and bars. Today, Hermanus is more than just a popular holiday destination and offers visitors all kinds of activities, both energetic and relaxing. Visitors can explore the Old Harbour Museum, which is comprised of the charming fisherman’s village, the old harbour, and the Whale House Museum; hike through the nearby Fernkloof Nature Reserve, and sample an array of top-quality wine along the famed Hermanus Wine Route.

Hermanus Old Harbour

The Old Harbour provided a rocky but safe shelter for the many small fishing boats that were stopping over at Hermanus around the middle of the nineteenth century to take advantage of the abundance and variety of fish. Then, in the 1940’s, a new harbour was built. In 1970, the Old Harbour was proclaimed a national monument and in 1972, it became an open-air museum. Situated at the base of the cliffs overlooking the waters of Walker Bay, the museum offers a look into the history of this seaside town with its collection of indoor and open-air exhibits that recount stories of the town’s fishing heritage and the fishermen who made it their home.

Harmanus Village Square

The Hermanus Village Square beckons tourists and visitors to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere Hermanus offers. Visitors can explore a selection of shops selling anything and everything such as clothing, jewellery, arts and craft supplies, gifts, and electronics, as well as indulging in massages. The vibrant plaza features a selection of dining establishments to suit all visitors’ gastronomic preferences. Facilities include a children’s playground and outdoor seating.
